Chip sealing (also known as oil and stone or chip-stone resurfacing) is the process of utilizing liquid asphalt and clean stone to provide an ‘armor coat’ over your driveway.
While a Hot-Mix Overlay may be cost- prohibitive, our method has been proven to significantly extend the lifespan of driving surfaces and to save our customer’s money. When used on existing pavement, chip seal can renew the wear surface, fill in cracks to prevent water intrusion, and provide a skid-resistant durable surface. If you live in the Northeast, you should consider Chip-Stone Resurfacing.
Once we have ensured there is suitable sub-base material, we then fine grade that material and compact it to establish proper pitch. We then install a 2″ layer of 3/4″ clean stone to act as the penetrating layer for the new surface. Hot liquid asphalt is then applied and covered by a 1⁄2″ or 3/8″ layer of clean stone.
A second layer of hot liquid asphalt is then applied and covered with a final coat of stone. The ‘finish stone’ can be chosen by the customer to match the aesthetic looks of the surrounding property. Finally, we compact the combined surfaces into a hardened finished product.
A ‘Single Chip’ seal is best utilized to extend the lifespan of the existing pavement. When installing a single chip seal over an existing surface, we start by spraying an even coat of liquid asphalt onto the prepared surface with a distributor. The liquid is then followed by a predetermined application of fine or coarse aggregates, typically either a 1/4″ or 3/8″ chip stone, depending on your needs.
Our stone spreader and asphalt distributors are computer controlled to apply a uniform application to the surface at a precise rate for a consistent finished product from curb to curb. Following the liquid and stone application to the driveway, we then static roll the surface with a pneumatic-tired roller to ensure the stones are embedded equally into the asphalt emulsion.
When installing a double chip seal we first spray liquid asphalt emulsion onto the surface with an asphalt distributor, followed by a 3/8″ stone spread into the liquid asphalt. The first coat is rolled with a steel drum roller knocking the 3/8” stones flat into the liquid to prepare for a final coat of oil and stone. We then spray over the 3/8″ chip with another coat of asphalt and spread a smaller 1⁄4″ stone into the liquid asphalt.
The driveway is then rolled with a rubber-tired roller pushing the stones into the voids of the 3/8″ stone to ensure the finish coat is embedded into the liquid. One of the many reasons for installing a 3/8″ chip furnished with a 1⁄4″ chip is to prevent the rough texture that is commonly experienced with a conventional chip.
We manufacture all of our own products to ensure that we exceed industry standards and guarantee customer satisfaction.

When can I drive on my new driveway?
Your new chip seal driveway can require, on average, up to two days to cure properly. Hot, dry weather speed the process. Cold wet weather slows it. To take the guesswork out, you can rely 100% on our experts to advise you when your driveway is ready.
Will there be any additional costs not on the bid?
We pride ourselves on including all costs in the bid, including taxes. The quote you see is the price you pay. No surprises.
How will you protect the property and landscaping during the process?
As professionals in the chip-sealing industry, we pride ourselves on respecting our customers’ property and landscaping. After 50 years experience in the industry, we know how to install a new driveway professionally, without damaging your landscape.
What kind of maintenance is required with a new chip-seal driveway?
Your new chip-seal driveway requires minimum maintenance. Blow off the surface when you notice any debris on it.
How do I remove snow?
We recommend plowing your driveway with a rubber edged snow plow or snowblower for the first season. Once the liquid has had time to fully cure and has been embedded into the liquid by traffic for a year, the chip-seal is less likely to be susceptible to plow damage.
