A ‘Single Chip’ seal is best utilized to extend the lifespan of the existing pavement. When installing a single chip seal over an existing surface, we start by spraying an even coat of liquid asphalt onto the prepared surface with a distributor. The liquid is then followed by a predetermined application of fine or coarse aggregates, typically either a 1/4″ or 3/8″ chip stone, depending on your needs.
Our stone spreader and asphalt distributors are computer controlled to apply a uniform application to the surface at a precise rate for a consistent finished product from curb to curb. Following the liquid and stone application to the driveway, we then static roll the surface with a pneumatic-tired roller to ensure the stones are embedded equally into the asphalt emulsion.
When installing a double chip seal we first spray liquid asphalt emulsion onto the surface with an asphalt distributor, followed by a 3/8″ stone spread into the liquid asphalt. The first coat is rolled with a steel drum roller knocking the 3/8” stones flat into the liquid to prepare for a final coat of oil and stone. We then spray over the 3/8″ chip with another coat of asphalt and spread a smaller 1⁄4″ stone into the liquid asphalt.
The driveway is then rolled with a rubber-tired roller pushing the stones into the voids of the 3/8″ stone to ensure the finish coat is embedded into the liquid. One of the many reasons for installing a 3/8″ chip furnished with a 1⁄4″ chip is to prevent the rough texture that is commonly experienced with a conventional chip.

What is an oil and stone driveway?
An oil and stone driveway (chip‑seal) uses a liquid asphalt binder (“oil”) followed by a layer of stone aggregate, compacted to create a textured, durable surface.
How long will an oil and stone driveway last in Madison, CT?
With proper installation and maintenance, this type of driveway can last up to 10‑15 years or more, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
Is an oil and stone driveway more affordable than asphalt?
Yes, because the process uses less material and fewer costly layers, it’s generally more cost‑effective while offering strong performance and aesthetics.
Will the surface be rough compared to asphalt?
The textured finish offers excellent traction and a distinctive aesthetic; if desired, we can select a smoother aggregate for a more refined look.
How should I maintain my new driveway?
Routine cleaning, occasional crack repair and avoiding harsh plow edges in the first year will help ensure longevity. For chip‑seal surfaces, use rubber‑edged plows or blowers initially.

Absolutely, we specialize in residential chip‑seal and oil and stone driveways in New England, including the Madison, CT region.
